Upcoming ILS Events

Greetings all! It's been a while since the blog's been updated, but we'll try to do a better job of it from here on out. We have two ILS events to announce.

First, on April 14th we've got a great event scheduled entitled "Arizona: A haven for Refugees?" It will examine the international refugee system and Arizona's place within it from several different levels - international, federal, state, and local NGO. Charles Shipman, State Refugee Coordinator -Arizona Refugee Resettlement Program, Joanne Morales - Director of Refugee Programs for Catholic Charities, and Daniel Rothenberg - Executive Director of the Center for Law and Global Affairs (and ILS' faculty advisor) will comprise the panel. The event will run from 7:00-8:30 PM in Armstrong Hall, Rm. 114. Hope to see you all there!!

The next ILS event (and, unfortunately, the last of the year) will be on April 18th from 12:15-1:15 in Armstrong Hall (exact room forthcoming). It will feature two lawyers from Avnet speaking to us on various international business issues.

Keep an eye on Daily Disclosure and your e-mails for more info on both events. Thanks for a great year! It's been a bit rough at times with getting ILS up and going, but I'm confident that we've laid a great foundation for the future!

OWIT CLE on International Business and Trade Issues

Sandra Erickson, the director of the law school's international LLM program, sent me an e-mail about the following CLE that to be presented by OWIT. It will be held on Feb. 17 (only 3 days away!!!) and will deal with a number of international trade issues and feature several high-powered executives who regularly work in the area. Not only would this be a fantastic educational experience, it will also likely be a great networking opportunity.

Here's the link to OWIT's site if you're interested in learning more. The cost to attend for students is $50 - well worth the money if you're interested in these sorts of issues.

Next ILS Meeting: 2/21 - Drone Warfare: Why Should I Care?

Our next ILS meeting will be on Monday, February 21 at 12:15 in Rm. 114. See the flyer below for more details, or watch for our posts on Daily Disclosure. This event will serve as a kick-off/primer for the Center for Law and Global Affairs' 2/24 conference in Washington, D.C. on the same subject.

ILS Event TODAY

Today (2/14) at 12:15 in Armstrong Hall Rm. 118 the International Law Society will be holding a lunchtime meeting. Juan Moreno, an associate with Bryan Cave, LLP will be speaking to us. Mr. Moreno's practice deals primarily with international trade and development issues, so it should be an interesting presentation.

Hofstra's International Criminal Law Program

Hofstra just sent me the following e-mail about their summer program in Freiburg, Germany on international criminal law:

I am writing to invite you and members of your International Law Society to participate in Hofstra Law School’s International Criminal Law Program, taking place in Freiburg, Germany from July 30 to August 13, 2011. The program is co-sponsored by Hofstra Law School and the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law. The Institute is located in the Black Forest area on the southwestern tip of Germany bordering France and Switzerland. Non-Hofstra students are eligible and encouraged to apply, but should consult their school about any restrictions beforehand. If you can, I would appreciate it if you forward the information on this program to members of your organization.

Wikileaks, Free Speech, & National Security

On Friday, Feb. 11 at Noon in Rm. 114 the Center for Law and Global Affairs will be hosting an event on Wikileaks' impact on national security and the free speech issues involved. David J. Bodney, a partner with the law firm of Steptoe & Johnson, LLP, will be the featured speaker. Mr. Bodney has more than 25 years experience on a range of constitutional law issues related to free speech.
